In response to a dramatic increase in the number of families living in poverty from 2000 to 2006, United Way of Larimer County organized the Pathways Past Poverty Initiative. In an effort to explore the complex factors that contribute to poverty, United Way convened 8 task forces. Out of the work of these task forces, eleven goals emerged. These goals were presented to the community in a forum in May 2008. At this forum, families who are struggling to move out of poverty participated in prioritizing the goals. The number one priority identified during this process is the goal concerning access to child care:
“Ensure families in Larimer County have access to quality child care for their children that they can afford, that supports their children’s development, and supports their ability to be present and productive at work and school (including when children are sick)”
Representatives from ECCLC staff are participating with other community members in developing strategies to make child care more accessible and more affordable for low income families.
